This topic raises the controversial issue of whether students should engage in part-time work to fund their education while they study. Indisputably, a part-time work would help students deal with their loans. However, students should spend all their time on school-related activities during their study.
First of all, in the United States it is not unfamiliar to many students to work part-time to fund their education. Especially, during college, most of the students take the opportunity to work at the times that remain from the school work to ease their loans. However, they miss various opportunities that they can have only during school but not after they graduate. Of course, one of them is to get involved in an academic work with a professor. Particularly, during college, professors are using all the help they can get while publishing their scholarly articles and books. This need of the professors gives students a great chance to have an understanding of how academia works. However, most of the time, this chance is only open to students enrolled in the school. Considering that only a few numbers of students pursue a career in academia being involved in an academic work during school might be the only chance they will ever get in a life time.
Additionally, schools are encouraging students to take internship on the remaining time after school. Like an assistantship with a professor, this chance is given only to students. After graduation, finding an internship can be challenging because their laws against having someone work for a low pay or without a pay. Therefore, employers are reluctant to hire intern if they don’t get some school credit in return. This way during an internship student don’t work for free and employers don’t have to pay them for their work. More importantly, students must do some internships to get experience before they graduate because finding a job right after school with no experience can be very challenging. Instead of taking a part-time job, students should focus more on getting more experience during school, so they can find jobs easily after graduate and start paying for their education loans.
Besides, almost in every major there is a professional test for newly graduates to start practicing their major. For example, law graduates have to take the bar exam in order to start doing their job. Of course, in school, there are specific classes on how to do good at the exam, however, since teaching the context is a priority for schools, these classes are limited in size and number. Therefore, a law student has to study for the bar exam after school not to postpone his dream of being a practicing lawyer. Instead of taking a part-time job, students should focus more on such preparing for such exams, so they can start making money as soon as possible after they graduate and pay for their education loans.
In addition, schools offer extracurricular activities for free or an affordable price to their students. Those activities are only open to current students of the school. They help students clear their mind or adopt a new hobby which eventually help them do better at the classes. Like internship and assistantships, those extracurricular activities might be the only chance to learn a new skill for student, especially a poor one. Also, before start facing adult life, students must learn how to cook, or how to open a bank account and save money or how to exercise. Instead of taking advantage of such opportunities to learn about real life when there is still time taking a part-time cleaning job would be a waste of their time.
Although, a part-time work is tempting for many students who have hard time paying for their education, students should take advantage of the opportunities that their school provide to become more able to find jobs easier.
