This topic raises the controversial issue of whether competition discourages non-athletes to engage in professional sports.  Indisputably, there are regular sports events which are designed only for professional athletes. We can see that not many non-professional athletes engage in even in open to public events because of strong competition. However, competition needs to take place in sports, like every other profession, to encourage athletes to do better.

First of all, we should acknowledge that sports are a field of profession and athletes are professionals who get paid for their performance. Although the most common reason to engage in sports might be fun, health or killing time, for professional athletes the main reason to engage in sports is because this is what professionally they do best. Like a child develops interest in law enforcement, the most successful athletes of today probably developed interest in sport when they were little. This might be thanks to competition that take place in this profession. It might be the case they became professional basketball player because they saw Michael Jordan playing in the TV and thought that he is the best. When young basketball player is interviewed today and asked why they chose this path it is not uncommon that they talked about their favorite basketball player that they are inspired by. Many of them also include that their life time goal is to be the best of their time like Michael Jordan was in his time or even be better.

Of course, there are sports events like the NBA plays, that are not even open to non-professionals. This is quite reasonable since non-lawyers cannot present a client at a courtroom. Having said that non-professional basketball players might feel discouraged to engage in even non-professionals sports events because they feel like their chance of winning is not very high. However, their discouragement fault is not necessarily because of competition where it might be the case that the sports even planner did not take into account that some might be better basketball players and there has to be leagues to level the competing teams. In this case, beginner basketball players would play against their equals. This would be more competitive than beginners playing with professional since both teams are equals. Indeed, this competition would encourage the players to make more effort to win the play. Today, in many sports events considering that competition draws more people to do sports, teams are selected based on professional levels of players. High school basketball plays in school are designed to have different levels. There are regular biking races that take place in New York for causes where elderly bike to increase awareness for breast cancer. Of course, winner is awarded however, it is a fair play because only people at similar ages are allowed to compete.
